to Live Longer And Feel Better, by Linus Pauling "Arthritis is inflammation of a joint. More than one hundred different kinds of arthritis have been characterized, with many different causes. Gout, for example, is caused by the formation of crystals of sodium hydrogen urate in the joint. Nutritional factors are important in both causing and controlling some kinds of arthritis. An attack of gout may occur from overeating, especially eating too much meat, and from drinking too much alcohol and not enough water. Eating a large amount of meat, especially certain organ meats, increases the level of uric acid in the blood, and increasing the amount of alcohol and decreasing the amount of water in the body fluids make it easier for the crystals of sodium hydrogen urate to deposit in the joints. To prevent an attack of gout the intake of meat should be kept low and a large amount of water should be drunk, at least three quarts per day. Also, the urine should be kept alkaline, because sodium hydrogen urate is more soluble in alkaline urine than in acidic urine. Alkaline urine can be achieved by taking sodium bicarbonate, trisodium citrate, or sodium ascorbate. I recommend the last. Water is the fourth major nutrient. It is required for life in the amount of about one liter (1) per day, partially to produce urine to carry off the harmful substances that have been extracted from the blood by the filtering processes that operate in the two million filtering units (nephrons) in the kidneys. A larger intake of water, preferably about 3 Liters (more than 3 quails) per day, is needed for the best of health. A good habit is to drink a glass of water every hour. Soft drinks provide water, but they are undesirable because of the sugar or the sugar substitutes that they contain. Carbonated water, orange juice, and other fruit juices are good sources of water, as is also beer, in limited amount. One reason for a high intake of water is that it leads to a high volume of urine; this reduces the burden on the kidneys, which excrete a diluted urine with less work than they do a concentrated urine. That is especially important for persons with impaired kidney function. Another reason is that with a high intake of water there is less chance that crystals of one kind or another will form out of the body fluids. Gout results from the formation of crystals of sodium urate in the joints and tendons, and pseudo-gout from the similar crystallization of calcium pyrophosphate dihydrate". End of extracts from

Gout can affect any joint of the body, particularly in the great toe joint. The pain is due to formation of uric acid crystals in the joints precipitated by high levels of uric acid in the blood. A diet with moderate intake of protein is the first step in reducing the the uric acid level in the blood. ... Avoid purinerich food such as organ meats (liver, stomach, kidney), shellfish, prawns, lobsters and anchovies. Purine is a protein component that breaks down to form uric acid in the body. It is also best to restrict the intake of tomatoes, oranges, peas, mushrooms and wholewheat products as these too are acid forming. Cut down on alcohol. Drop some extra pounds if overweight since extra weight adds pressure at the joints. Eat fish oil and celery seed. Fish oil contains essential fatty acids that has anti-inflammatory properties and will be of benefit. Celery seed is a good remedy for gout attacks as it not only reduces inflammation but also helps lower uric acid levels. However, the therapeutic dose for Celery seed is Omega 33,000 mg daily. in the year 2000 with slight changes She also writes in the newspaper the Malaysian Newspaper the Star on May 14 in the year 2000 the following with slight changes: A formula containing the vitamins A,C,E and Zinc would be of great benefit your joint pain as would fish oil. Another health "instructor" PhD Rajen M writes since around 1990 in the Sunday Plus section of the Malaysia Newspaper Star about purine-rich and protein rich food that the scientifically proven connection with gout is not very strong and that the Zone Diet can help a lot against gout. The Zone diet can in short be described as to minimize carbohydrates even if they come from brown rice, potatoes and wholemeal bread. Even if the carbohydrates comes from so called complex carbohydrates. It also means increasing the relative amount of protein and and that we must eat enough of fat at every major meal and drinking enough of absolutely clean water. By doing so we can control the amount of blood sugar in the blood at all times and therefore quickly go down in weight and avoid high cholesterol and a lot of other side effects of too high or too low blood sugar. If we eat too much carbohydrates the high blood sugar goes up quickly, within one hour and increases the amount of Insulin which among other side effects can cause gout. 80% of all Cholesterol is produced by the body itself from the carbohydrates that we eat when insulin levels rise in the body. Only 20% comes from eating fat. If we don't eat much carbohydrates the insulin levels and blood sugar levels are kept at a more normal level for a long time (Many hours). We also fell more energetic with less carbohydrates for a longer time. Fat we need for different functions in the body, including the brain which consists of over 50% fat. The Zone diet also means a large intake of water and that we eat less. In other words very close to the Sunnah diet in Islam, (Food 1/3, Absolutely clean water 1/3 and leave 1/3 for air). See about the Zone diet below. Rajen M also writes very positively about Omega 3. The modern diet contains too little of fish-based food and therefore the relation of Omega 3 and 6 does not balance. They should be in equal amounts in the diet, but Omega 6 might in modern diets be taken up to 25 times more than Omega 3. Therefore a strong daily supplement of Omega 3 is especially important. Omega 3 can help a lot against arthritis of different kinds in joints. Among land based foods only Flax seeds contain large amounts of Omega 3. My
own advice about Zone-diet: Whenever you try to follow the Zone diet,
don't eat meat too often or too much. Your body fluids become acidic
and you get a lot of diseases. If you follow the Zone Diet increase raw
fresh organic vegetables and some organic fruits and minimize meat and
other foods that makes your body fluids acidic. Try to follow your body
fluids alkaline to reach and maintain best health. My own personal experience with gout in the form of a toe that looked like a giant strawberry and I could not touch even if I did it myself very slowly and very carefully, is that Gout goes away within around a week with eating almost only vegetables and some fruits. It become better even after a single day of such food. Try to eat as much as possible of raw fresh organic vegetables and some organic fruits. If you can eat only this you are almost 99% guaranteed to become well again rather quickly. The reason I write about all this other stuff is that people mainly don't have the full discipline and also they don't know the reason behind being so very strict. Some even don't know what a vegetable is. E.g. think that Ketchup is a vegetable. Gerson.org cures 99% of all diseases with an improved version of such a diet, since 80 years including Cancer with heaps of proofs on their web site. If you do Gersons diet with their remarkable unique fruit juice machine, the Norwalk Juicer, you probably also get rid of addictions, scars on your skin, get better mood, you think more clearly, get a more normal weight and also get other numerous positive side effects. Gerson is a profit free organization with lots and lots of proofs on their web site. Don't ask your doctor if it is true since he might lose his job and license if he answers without lying, and his social status and income and career... Western Medicine earns more on sick people than on healthy people. You will sometimes notice that many doctors are scared when you ask these questions. My personal experience was that I had to avoid especially bread and everything with Gluten which you can find in almost everything made on flour including Wheat flour which has the most Gluten of all flours. Avoid carbohydrates especially refined sugar e.g. chocolate bars and sweet processed drinks with GMO corn in the form of HFCS = High Corn Fructose Syrup. Avoid everything that can make the body liquids acidic, like Coffee or sugary things. If you are a coffee addict you have to choose between coffee or gout. Especially if you drink more than just a cup a day. After 3 days of anguish and head ache from caffeine abstinence you will probably feel better. Or try Gersons method and your addiction might go away almost right away with the right juice machine and ingredients. Zam Zam water or other holy waters like genuine (they often sell false such) water from Lourdes or LLL water are ideal to drink since they are highly alkaline. Lemons are acidic but it helps the body fluids to become alkaline after eating lemons. Baking soda (= Sodium bicarbonate) can make body fluids alkaline. Try to get a version of baking soda without Aluminum if possible. Sometimes sold in organic shops. Perhaps the version they sell in Country Farm Organics in Bangsar in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, is without Aluminum. I personally also avoided all milk products. I took MOO from Alterni.com which is an organic form of calcium, magnesium and phosphorous supplement in the same proportions as in the skeleton. The body steals Calcium from the skeleton when body fluids become acidic. These supplements help restore the right balance of Calcium which helps make the body fluids alkaline, God wiling. Avoid Calcium tablets that are from vitamin shops since they are not organic but metallic. Avoid all processed food including pasteurized liquids, even commercial pasteurized yogurt or pasteurized milk, ice cream etc. Pasteurization makes minerals in the liquid metallic and the minerals suddenly become enemies instead of friends to the body. Normal pasteurized milk makes the body fluids acidic and more Calcium leaks out of the skeleton. In advanced stages it becomes osteoporosis which is very common in milk drinking countries like Sweden and New Zealand. If you must drink milk, drink only organic fresh unpasteurized milk from cows that eat fresh grass that has not been sprayed with pesticides. Meat can make the body fluids acidic, especially when eating it every day and without fresh raw vegetables. But if you are in much pain avoid it completely including chicken or other so called white meat. You can, God willing, eat it again after a couple of weeks or so when you are better. Drink a lot of absolutely clean water, R/O or distilled or Zam Zam or fresh unpasteurized fruit Juice. The best R/O water is your own home made fresh raw unpasteurized fruit juice. Vitamin E in the form of Tocotrienol can be good as well as enhanced Turmeric with the name narCox from Alterni.com. Mix some Celery or even better Celery seeds into your fruit juice. If you must make the juice sweet add some carrots, apples, Stevia or raw unprocessed unpasteurized honey. If you don't know what honey you have it is most surely pasteurized = dead and inactive and rather useless. I also took some Kei Chee = Wolfsberries which contains the perhaps highest percentage of antioxidants of all fruits and berries possible including the very good blueberries. and organic Pumpkin seeds, grinding them into the fruit juice. As soon as you can exercise, do so, to improve blood circulation. Check on my About page what I avoid to eat to become better with leaky gut, for anything I might have missed. Whatever is good against leaky gut is probably also good against gout. I personally got the gout when I increased bread and chocolate which I truly should not eat anyway. A week or two on the local roti Nun and some Swedish Knaeckebroed from the local IKEA shop in Kuala Lumpur will probably give me back my gout again, with or without chocolate. I still eat such, but now perhaps only every 3 days and in limited amounts. End personal experience Dark blue, or dark red fruits and berries contain properties that are good against pain in joints etc. Eat them fresh, raw and organic, non pasteurized. if you can only find or can only afford not organic e.g. grapes that are dark blue you can clean them by putting them in water 30 minutes with a few spoons of raw natural unprocessed sea salt or rock salt + half a lemon. Avoid the reddish colored rock salt since it might contain fluor1.html. Rinse after the bath and many pesticides should have gone. Amazinghealth.com even describes diet solely on grapes that is just wonderful for most diseases including osteoporosis and most probably also gout. Dr. Mercola has an interesting article about Obesity as a symptom. It is connected with many diseases including Gout. The primary cause of obesity, insulin resistance and chronic inflammation is High Fructose. High Fructose leads to high levels of Uric Acid. To reduce Uric acid levels we have to reduce intake of Fructose and other sugars from our diet. Also recommended is a healthy diet in general, optimizing Vitamin D levels, drinking only the purest water, avoiding toxins, eating the right fats, eating raw, exercise, get plenty of sleep and manage stress. |
